Klima Action Malaysia

Klima Action Malaysia (KAMY) is a climate justice movement led by youth in Malaysia. They believe that supporting vulnerable groups like Indigenous communities, women, and youth, nurturing meaningful partnerships, and strengthening constituencies across civil society organizations set the foundation for a people's led climate action.

KAMY's story

KAMY is a feminist climate justice organisation advancing rights-based, gender-responsive climate governance in Malaysia. Since 2020, we've worked at the intersection of climate action and social justice, bridging grassroots communities especially women, Indigenous Peoples, and youth with policy-makers to ensure Malaysia's climate response centers the most vulnerable. Through research, advocacy, and coalition-building, we translate complex climate policies into accessible action while platforming marginalized voices in spaces where critical decisions about our climate future are made.

KAMY's focus areas are: Business and Human Rights; Climate Communication; Gender & Women; Indigenous people; Just Energy Transition; Legal Empowerment.

What they do

#MYCLIMATESTRIKE

Tracking all of KAMY's climate strikes in Kuala Lumpur throughout 2019. Organized with grassroots communities, civil societies, and students in Malaysia. The climate strikes have been attended by ~9,000 people.

Weaving Hopes for the Future

Weaving Hopes for the Future is an art and cultural response to the climate degradation and climate injustice around us, focusing on creating a space for Indigenous Orang Asli  youths and women to participate meaningfully in climate action both locally and globally. The final artwork—woven by Orang Asli women using traditional methods—was showcased at COP26, and two Indigenous delegates from Weaving Hopes later attended COP27.

Climate journalism training

In 2022, Klima Action Malaysia (KAMY) with the support of the European Climate Foundation (ECF), launched Lensa Iklim, a climate journalism and energy journalism program in Peninsula Malaysia that aims to upskill and empower Malaysian journalists and mainstream news media to improve climate change and energy transition reporting. The program now is supported by Tara Climate Foundation.

Here's how Klima Action Malaysia has been using our Supporters' donations:

  • Administrative costs - Website hosting costs, rent, Zoom premium, Restream, etc.
  • Supporting volunteers - KAMY’s content creation team and podcast team of 10 people have been working voluntarily for the past year. 98% of them are students, currently studying locally and abroad. Their scope of work include, researching, interviewing, curating digestible infographics, translating, and graphic design. Their work has immensely helped increase climate communication in Malaysia. Any amount of donation would motivate our team to work better and create more climate content.
